Casting / Centrifugal Casting

Centrifugal Casting in Bronze and High-Alloy Metals

Centrifugal casting uses rotational force to produce dense cylindrical components with the inclusions driven to the bore. It is most often associated with bronze and other non-ferrous metals, and with high-alloy stainless and other exotic ferrous materials. Monmet supplies vertical and horizontal centrifugal castings to drawing.

Centrifugal Casting

How It Works

Molten metal is poured into a rapidly rotating mold. Centrifugal force pushes the metal against the mold wall, expelling slag and gases inward where they can be machined out. The result is a fully dense outer layer with no shrinkage porosity.

Alloys It Suits

Centrifugal casting is most often associated with bronze and other non-ferrous metals — bearing bronzes, aluminum bronze, brass — and with high-alloy stainless and other exotic ferrous materials where soundness through the wall matters. Grades are poured to the specification on your drawing or purchase order.

Vertical vs Horizontal

Vertical centrifugal is used for short, large-diameter parts such as rings, sleeves and gear blanks. Horizontal centrifugal is used for long tubes, pipes and cylindrical bodies. Both configurations are available through our partner foundries.

Typical Products

Bronze bushings, sleeves, wear rings and bearing shells; high-alloy stainless and heat-resistant tubes and rings; bi-metallic sleeves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Centrifugal force pushes denser metal outward and expels lighter inclusions inward, producing a fully dense outer wall with no shrinkage porosity.

Yes. Two alloys can be poured sequentially to combine a wear-resistant outer surface with a tougher inner core.

Most often bronze and other non-ferrous metals, along with high-alloy stainless and other exotic ferrous materials. Size is set by the alloy and the machine the part is routed to — send the drawing and we will confirm what can be poured centrifugally and what is better sand cast.
