Casting / Alloy Steel Casting

Casting Alloy Steel — Foundry Practice

Alloy steel castings deliver targeted combinations of strength, toughness and wear resistance for the most demanding heavy-industry service. Monmet casts Cr-Mo and Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel grades for mining, cement and energy; manganese steel and white iron are common industry choices for the same duty and are discussed here for context.

Alloy Steel Casting

Low-Alloy Grades

Chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum grades are quench-and-tempered to the mechanical properties called for on the drawing, for high-stress structural and pressure parts.

Manganese Steel (Industry Background)

Austenitic manganese steel is a well-known work-hardening material used across the industry for jaw plates, crusher liners and rail crossings where impact loading is severe.

White Irons (Industry Background)

Martensitic nickel-chromium and high-chromium white irons are commonly specified across the industry for sliding-abrasion service in mineral processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Manganese steel is the industry's go-to choice where impact loading work-hardens the surface — crusher jaws, mantles, hammers and railway crossings. It is a poor choice for sliding-only abrasion, where alloy steel or white iron perform better.

Nickel-chromium white iron is generally tougher and less costly but less abrasion-resistant than high-chrome white iron, which is the more common industry choice for slurry pumps and pulverizer liners.
