Spider Castings for Gyratory Crushers

The spider is the top structural casting of a gyratory crusher: it carries the upper main shaft bearing and spans the feed opening. Monmet supplies replacement spider castings complete — cast, heat treated where required, finish machined, bushed, painted and crated — to your drawing, or reverse-engineered from the part you have in service.

Quick answer

A spider casting is the top structural member of a gyratory crusher. It supports the upper main shaft bearing and bushing above the crushing chamber. Monmet supplies complete replacement spiders — cast, machined, bushed and painted — from your drawing or an existing part.

What the part does

The spider bridges the top of the crusher shell and houses the upper bearing and bushing that locate the main shaft. It takes the load and vibration of the crushing action while remaining open enough to pass feed into the chamber, so soundness and dimensional accuracy at the bore and the mounting faces are what matter.

How Monmet supplies them

Spiders are produced through our worldwide network of foundries and machine shops. Patterns are built or modified, the casting is poured and shaken out, cleaned and ground, examined, then finish machined at the bore, mounting faces and bolt pattern. The bushing is shrink-fitted, the casting is primed and top coated, and it ships crated on a purpose-built base.

What Monmet needs to quote

The crusher size, a drawing or the part in service for reverse engineering, the bushing arrangement, machining tolerances, examination requirements stated on your drawing, and the material grade stated on your drawing or purchase order.

How a spider casting is produced

  1. Pattern build

The timber pattern is built and modified on the moulding floor before any metal is poured. Pattern accuracy sets the dimensional accuracy of the finished casting.

  2. Pattern modification

A pattern segment is reworked and sealed for the arm profile. Working from an existing pattern keeps lead time and tooling cost down on repeat components.

  3. Shakeout

The casting is broken out of the mould after solidification and controlled cooling, still covered in bonded sand and gating.

  4. Cleaning and grinding

Gating, risers and residual sand are removed, and the casting is inspected before the surfaces are dressed back to the drawing profile.

  5. Final cleaning and grinding

Final dressing of the rim and arms ahead of machining.

  6. Finish machining

Mounting faces, the bore and the bolt pattern are finish machined to the tolerances stated on the drawing.

  7. Bushing installation

The bushing is shrink-fitted into the machined bore, then checked for fit and concentricity before assembly is signed off.

  8. Primer coat

Surfaces are prepared and primed to the paint system called for on the order, with machined faces masked and protected.

  9. Finish paint

The finished casting after top coat — dimensionally inspected, documented and ready for the final release inspection.

  10. Packed for shipment

Crated on a purpose-built timber base with machined surfaces wrapped, ready for heavy-lift handling and ocean freight.
