Forging / Ring Rolling

The Ring Rolling Process

Ring rolling produces seamless rolled rings with circumferential grain flow — the strongest possible structure for bearings, gears and flanges. Monmet supplies rolled rings in a wide range of tonnages and large outside diameters in carbon, alloy and stainless steels.

Ring Rolling

Process

A pierced doughnut preform is rotated between an idler and a driven roll while a side mandrel reduces wall thickness and grows diameter. The result is a one-piece ring with no weld seam and a continuous circumferential fiber pattern.

Typical Applications

Slewing bearings for cranes and wind turbines, gear rings, large flanges (ANSI 600#–2500#), pressure vessel courses, tube sheets and bull gears.

Profiles

Rectangular, contoured (T, L, U) and custom step profiles supplied in the as-rolled state or heat treated and rough machined.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rolled rings have continuous circumferential grain flow with no weld discontinuity, giving higher fatigue strength and superior burst pressure.

Yes. T, L, U and stepped profiles are rolled to near-net shape, reducing customer machining time.
