Forging / Open-Die Forging

Open-Die Forging Services

Open-die forging shapes heated billets between flat or simple-contour dies to produce massive shafts, blocks, discs and cylinders with continuous grain flow. Monmet supplies open-die forgings across a wide range of tonnages in carbon, alloy and stainless steel grades, with the inspection and acceptance criteria stated on your drawing.

Open-Die Forging

Process & Capability

Heated ingots are forged between flat or contoured dies into round bars, stepped shafts, hollow cylinders, blocks and pancake discs. Open-die work consolidates the centerline porosity of the parent ingot and aligns grain flow with the part's principal stress axis.

Alloy Range

Carbon and low-alloy steels (4140, 4340, 8620), stainless steels (austenitic, martensitic, duplex and precipitation-hardening families), tool steels, nickel-based superalloys and titanium. Each heat is supplied with the material certification your drawing or purchase order calls for.

Heat Treatment & Test

Normalize, quench-and-temper, solution-anneal and age treatments coordinated through our partner mills. Test pads, prolongations and sacrificial coupons are machined to customer specification for the testing scope named on your drawing or purchase order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Single-piece open-die forgings from small components to very large pieces, with rotor shafts and pressure-vessel components supplied to the weight your drawing calls for.

Yes — open-die mandrel forging produces hollow cylinders with no weld seam, eliminating the boring waste of forging-from-solid for large bores.
