Kiln tire or support roller: which wears first and what should you spec?

Quick answer

The support roller is normally specified to wear before the tire, because it is the smaller, cheaper and more accessible component to change. That only holds if the roller is the softer of the pair and alignment is maintained — misalignment or a hard roller will grind the far more expensive tire instead.

Design the sacrificial part deliberately

Pair hardness so the roller is the sacrificial surface. When both parts are specified at the same hardness, wear distributes unpredictably and the tire — the far larger casting — can become the limiting component.

Creep and alignment tell you what is really wrong

Rising tire creep, roller skewing and shell ovality usually indicate an alignment or pier problem rather than a material problem. Replacing parts without correcting alignment repeats the wear pattern.

What to include in an RFQ

Kiln make and model, current tire and roller dimensions, measured creep, and any wear or crack mapping. Drawings speed the quote; where they are missing, dimensions from a shutdown inspection are enough to start.
